Take A Breath of Fresh Air Just Outside of Marrakech

A preferred destination for Marrakchis looking to escape the heat, this artificial lake (created thanks to a dam put in place less than a century ago) is the perfect escape from the city.
An unusual place with a surprising story

Just a half hour from Marrakech is a long lake in the middle of the plains. Residents of the imperial city often seek refuge here, particularly on Sundays, with a family picnic and cool off in the lake. After all, Lake Lalla Takerkoust Lake provides the one thing that’s missing in Marrakech: a natural place to swim.

Whether it’s for a bit of fun on the water or relaxation while soaking up the sun, a unique panoramic view surrounds visitors here.
Between the myths and legends, Lalla Takerkoust is filled with history, a unique place in its own right. First named Cavagnac during the French Protectorate, the dam (like a lake) is now known as Lalla Takerkoust, who according to residents is the patron saint of the area, and also where she’s buried.
But this name also refers to the upstream water from the mountains, that the people accredit to a Koranic passage of Al Kahf. The story of young Christians from Ephesus that God plunged into a mystical sleep after they had been immured in a cave by their pagan persecutors. This story has subsequently given rise to many popular interpretations. In fact, in Amizmiz, are seven tombs located not far from Lalla Takerkoust, known for its therapeutic properties: patients sometimes come for special treatments.
All kinds of things to do
The history may be rich, and the list of things to do here is certainly plentiful. In fact, many come for a swim and to enjoy the natural beauty of the area (the reflection of the Atlas Mountains off the lake is impressive), but staying at LakeLalla Takerkoust is full of possibilities.

Those seeking a bit of rest and relaxation will enjoy just lounging around, listening to the sounds of the water crashing and enjoying the sun.

For the more active, take out a pedalo, or go windsurfing, boating and kayaking, all of which are available at affordable prices. If you prefer to explore, a number of excursions are available in the surrounding area, including quad bike and scooter rentals. And for the more eco-conscious traveller, there’s nothing better than a walk in the surrounding area or fishing. There’s something for everyone at Lake Lalla Takerkoust.

Surrounding the lake, several small restaurants serve traditional dishes and succulent mint tea. Or pack a picnic and enjoy the view from this little piece of paradise
And for those looking to extend their stay, it’s possible to reserve one of the inns or guest houses in the area. After all, with so much to see and do, how could you leave this place so quickly?
A breath of fresh country air, a slower pace of life, and gorgeous scenery. What are you waiting for?
